Sea Shepherd’s Mission Statement

Established in 1977, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization. Our mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately balanced ocean ecosystems, Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations.

Interested in joining the most active volunteer marine conservation organization in the world? Whether its Sea, Shore or Land Sea Shepherd has a place for you to Defend, Conserve, and Protect, this great planet that we all share! You can choose between Crewing at SeaOnshore Volunteer, or Ground Crew. Volunteer aboard the Martin Sheen, John Paul DeJoria, and Farley Mowat Sea Shepherd is looking for dedicated individuals to crew aboard our ocean-going ships. Our obstacles are immense. The motivation to destroy life in our oceans is fueled by material greed.

It is easy to recruit crew for money, however, we need to recruit a crew motivated by passion. We need people who are compelled to fight the injustices perpetrated upon whales, dolphins, seals, sea turtles, sea birds, fish, and every living thing in the world’s oceans. We need such people on our ship and in the ranks of our supporters. All marine wildlife and the ecosystems in which they live are worth fighting for. We need your help in this endeavor. The Southern Ocean whale defense campaigns are coordinated by Sea Shepherd Australia Limited, a separate organization, and Sea Shepherd Conservation Society cannot accept donations or volunteers for those campaigns. Crew at Sea FAQ You do not need to fill out the Crew Application form to become a general member of Sea Shepherd, only if you wish to be considered for ship crew. And if you can’t crew aboard one of our ships, please become part of our Onshore Support Crew.

The Sea Shepherd NorCal Chapter was started in 2011 in San Francisco. Our area extends from Santa Rosa to the North, Sacramento to the East, and Santa Cruz to the South. We are proud to have several crew members who participated in the Antarctic, Cove Guardians, Faroe Islands, Bluefin Tuna, and the Dam Guardians Sea Lion defense campaigns.

Our mission is outreach and education about ocean conservation and Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. We are also involved in fundraising to support Sea Shepherd’s campaigns to defend ocean wildlife worldwide.

We welcome new members who are ready to be actively involved in outreach at events and festivals, and give their time and energy to our fundraising efforts. Our meetings are held on a quarterly basis at a location in San Francisco. Our NorCal Chapter expects active participation in our mission and that’s what it gets with our fabulous onshore volunteers! Please contact us at norcal@seashepherd.org.
