About Us

Kindred Spirits Sanctuary was founded in late 2003 in response to an overwhelming need for farm animal sanctuaries. Farm animals are exploited every day in our society, and are subject to some of the most horrendous forms of harassment, abuse and neglect. Industrialized or factory farming operates on the basic premise that farm animals are mere commodities, not thinking, feeling beings. Animals that exist in these factories suffer in silence, it’s our mission to change that!

Kindred Spirits is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to ending the abuse and suffering of farm animals through direct rescue, advocacy, and education. We seek to provide a place where people can connect with these sentient beings and discover their unique (and often humorous!) personalities. At Kindred Spirits, farm animals are our friends, not our food. We are passionate about helping others form bonds with these remarkable animals, and gladly give tours on scheduled days!

Kindred Spirits Sanctuary invites you to come and give a pig a belly rub, or get a kiss from a cow! We’re currently accepting volunteers Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10am-1pm, as long as our schedule permits. The Sanctuary is located on just under 75 beautiful acres in Citra, Florida. The 166 sanctuary residents receive around-the-clock care, high quality diets, spacious barns, and green pastures in which to laze and graze. Most importantly, they are treated as individuals and given a loving, peaceful environment where they can live without pain, hunger, or fear of exploitation for their natural lives.

Tours & Vegan Potlucks

Tours

Tours last about ninety minutes and take place rain or shine. These events are free of charge and RSVP is not required. You’ll have the opportunity to meet some of our residents up close and take photos/videos.

Vegan Potlucks

We ask that a vegan dish is brought to these events, containing no meat, dairy, eggs, honey or gelatin and we usually say cook for 8-10 people. Our vegan potlucks are always followed by a tour, so you can meet some of our residents and hear their stories.

Volunteer

We are currently accepting volunteers on a per need basis. Volunteer work varies, depending on the current needs of the sanctuary and can include things like cleaning stalls, painting, landscaping, etc.

Vet Program

In 2017, Kindred Spirits Sanctuary started a new innovative program called Kindred Cares Veterinary Services. This program allowed us to hire a staff veterinarian and to assist other rescued farmed animals at little to no cost to the sanctuaries that provide them forever homes.

Kindred Cares Veterinary Services is currently operating in the south, in both Florida and Georgia, and our veterinarian, Dr. Rogers, oversees the medical care of over 1,000 rescued farmed animals. These animals are often rescued from horrible conditions and have been bred to live short lives. Due to those conditions, these animals need very specialized care and Dr. Rogers works closely with caregivers to make sure that each resident at the sanctuaries get the treatments that they need.

This program also allows us to reach veterinary medicine students, who are about to go out into the world, through our veterinary externship program. Extern’s work closely with Dr. Rogers and our vet tech, Emily. Our goal is to teach them to see these animals in a different light and help them understand that they are deserving of the same treatment as animals typically considered pets. We have a long ways to go, as even rescued farmed animals are considered by the medical community and the FDA to be ‘food animals’, but our hope is that through the years we will build a strong voice for farmed animals and their care.

We are not open to the public as a veterinary clinic and can not answer medical questions without a valid relationship with a sanctuary and the animals.
