marine wildlife conservation organization
Established in 1977, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization. Our mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately balanced ocean ecosystems, Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations.
Interested in joining the most active volunteer marine conservation organization in the world? Whether its Sea, Shore or Land Sea Shepherd has a place for you to Defend, Conserve, and Protect, this great planet that we all share! You can choose between Crewing at Sea, Onshore Volunteer, or Ground Crew. Volunteer aboard the Martin Sheen, John Paul DeJoria, and Farley Mowat Sea Shepherd is looking for dedicated individuals to crew aboard our ocean-going ships. Our obstacles are immense. The motivation to destroy life in our oceans is fueled by material greed.
It is easy to recruit crew for money, however, we need to recruit a crew motivated by passion. We need people who are compelled to fight the injustices perpetrated upon whales, dolphins, seals, sea turtles, sea birds, fish, and every living thing in the world’s oceans. We need such people on our ship and in the ranks of our supporters. All marine wildlife and the ecosystems in which they live are worth fighting for. We need your help in this endeavor. The Southern Ocean whale defense campaigns are coordinated by Sea Shepherd Australia Limited, a separate organization, and Sea Shepherd Conservation Society cannot accept donations or volunteers for those campaigns. The New York City chapter was formed in May 2010 and has since created an extensive outreach and fundraising program that is one of Sea Shepherd USA’s most active. Averaging between 20 and 30 days of events each year, the NYC chapter host’s documentary screenings, tables at events such as festivals and rock concerts, and organizes beach clean-ups; bake sales, and major fundraisers. Some chapter highlights have included our premiere of “Why Just One” in 2016 with Captain Paul Watson, “Waves of Change” benefit art show in 2013, and “Light Up the Night with Captain Paul Watson” fundraiser in 2012
Each of our volunteers brings a unique perspective and skill set to the chapter, but we all share a common desire to use our knowledge to protect the oceans and to meet new people who share our collective passion and who will help our chapter grow. Several NYC chapter volunteers have also participated in Operation Treasured Islands in Central and South America in 2017, Operation Jairo in Costa Rica, Honduras, and Florida in 2015 and 2016, our dolphin defense campaign in Taiji, Japan, Operation Infinite Patience as Cove Guardians since the 2011 campaign (2010) and in the Dam Guardians sea lion defense campaign on the Columbia River in 2013.
