The surroundings

Weissbriach is located in the Gitschtal valley, between Hermagor and the Weissensee. The Gitschtal is a side valley of the Gaital valley, which runs roughly from Villach via Hermagor to Kötschach-Mauthen, two beautiful valleys, very suitable for walks and other outdoor activities.

Ski02

Weissensee

From Weissbriach you can reach Lake Weissensee in fifteen minutes, one of the largest mountain lakes in the area. In summer time you can swim in the lake and in winter you can go ice skating. The Weissensee is also the scene of the Alternative 11-City Tour, well known among the Dutch. You can make beautiful hikes around the lake, which you can combine with the boat that makes several trips across the lake every day to different jetties (though not during the winter season).

PRESSEggersee

Another beautiful lake is the Presseggersee, located in the Gaital valley. A small mountain lake where you can also swim or skate. There is a beautiful walk around the lake taking about an hour and a half and there are several organised beach areas (with entrance). This is a very nice place to go.

Nassfeld

The area around Nassfeld, which also has the Nassfeld ski area with 110 km of slopes, is a paradise for outdoor and nature lovers. The area even extends to Italy! There is plenty to do regardless of the season. Hiking, mountain biking, skating, skiing or snowshoeing, it’s all possible. Take a look at the Nassfeld website for an overview of all the options.

Italy and Slovenia, three-country point

Carinthia lies on the borders with Italy and Slovenia. A stay in Weissbriach is therefore very suitable for a day trip to, for example, Tarvisio in Italy (50 km) or Planica (65 km), Kranjska Gora (70 km) and Ljubliana (150 km) in Slovenia. The three-country point is 70 km from Weissbriach where there’s also a small ski area.

Towns in the area

Do you want to visit a town in the area? Hermagor is 12 kilometers from Weissbriach with shops, restaurants and on Saturday there’s also a farmers’ market. Villach (55 km) is more of a city, with a shopping area containing the well known brands, several restaurants and cafes. Villach is also a spa town (Thermen Warmbad) with a beautiful historic centre, and a few museums.

Nearby is the Ossiacher See and Naturpark Dobratsch, the oldest nature park in Carinthia. Klagenfurt (95 km) is the capital of Carinthia. It is the sixth-largest city in Austria and has a beautiful historic centre and various sights and museums. Near Klagenfurt is the Wörthersee, the largest mountain lake in Carinthia

Activities

What can you experience in and around Haus 26?

Skiing and snowboarding

Of course you can ski with us! There is a small ski area in Weissbriach itself that is very suitable for the novice skier and boarder. The ski area of Nassfeld is 20 minutes away with 110 kilometers of slopes, in Austria and Italy, 30 lifts and 25 ski runs, cabins and restaurants.

Carinthia has a number of other small ski areas, nice for a day trip for example, such as at The Weissensee, Kötschach-Mauthen and at the Three-Country Point. Bastiaan will gladly take you into the area for a day or half a day. This way you don’t have to study the ski map yourself and you can cover a lot of ski meters in one day. *extra costs associated with guidance. Skiing is at your own risk.

Skating

Skating on the Weissensee and Presseggersee! These lakes will freeze over completely in the winter, so a guarantee of ice pleasure! The Alternative 11-City Tour (a famous event in the Netherlands, that is copied to Austria, due to lack of ice) is organized every year in January on Lake Weissensee, a great event for skating enthusiasts. Skating on a mountain lake is a wonderful experience.

Other activities Winter

Other winter sports possible in the Weissbriach area: – Winter hiking – Snowshoeing – Cross country skiing – Tour skiing

Summer

Walking and mountain hiking

The Weissbriach area is perfect for hiking. Walk down the street from Haus 26 and the hiking trails take you into the woods, up the mountains and down through the beautiful valley. Hiking trails are well maintained in Austria and clearly marked with yellow signs. We have hiking maps available to help prepare your walk. There are also a number of gorges for hiking in the area such as Garnitzenklamm (link: https://www.garnitzenklamm.at/) and the Mauthener Klamm and a short drive away for the Raggaschlucht.

Swimming

The summers can be quite hot here. It’s not without reason “the sunny side of the Alps”. You can cool off in the mountain lakes, such as the Weissensee and Presseggersee and a little further the Millstattersee and Ossiachersee. There are several (paid) beach pools on the lakes and some public beaches. A large part of the lakes consists of private beaches.

Cycling and mountain biking

Whether you like adventurous and rugged mountain biking or quiet cycling through beautiful surroundings, it’s all possible. There are both normal and electric bikes and mountain bikes available at the various rental stations. We can arrange this for you in advance if you wish. In Nassfeld you can also take your mountain bike in the Millennium Express lift and then cycle down the ski slopes!!

Other activities in the summer

In addition to walking, cycling and swimming, you can also play golf, or go kayaking, rafting and paragliding in the area. Look at the site of Nassfeld for an overview of All summer activities in the area: Nassfeld. Do you want to make a day trip in the area? Then look here Area.

Our kitchen

Good food, good for the environment and for yourself.

100% plant-based kitchen.

Pampering our guests is paramount, but we do so with an eye for the environment. How? Among other things by sourcing our electricity from hydropower, offering vegan soaps in our rooms and cooking completely plant-based.

There are various reasons for choosing vegan food. Whether you want to eat less meat now and then or eat completely vegan, whether you do it for your health, the environment or for the animals, you are always welcome to learn more about the vegan kitchen or just enjoy our meals.

Our offer

We offer our rooms including a vegan breakfast. A fully-fledged morning meal with lots of variety and alternatives to the well-known “ham & eggs” and cheese slices.

In addition, you can dine with us a number of evenings during the week. We serve a plant-based menu of at least 3 courses and with a good glass of wine if you so wish.

If you do want traditional food in the evening, that is also possible! There are plenty of options in the immediate area from simple to exclusive dining. We also have a list available with “vegan friendly” locations in the area.

On request we can also arrange a vegan lunch package for you. Great if you are going for a long walk and do not know if you will come across a place to eat! We ensure that you are well cared for on the road!

From autumn of 2021* we will also be running cooking workshops in Haus 26. Keep an eye on us for our offers and package deals!

Why the plant-based kitchen?

  • Less CO2 emissions- Livestock produces a considerable CO2 emission, more than the entire transport sector combined!
  • Less water consumption- The livestock industry uses a lot of water and also pollutes the groundwater. No less than 15,000 litres are needed for 1 kilo of beef.
  • better use of agricultural land- At least 70% of all agricultural land goes to the livestock industry. This mainly concerns soy and corn production for animal feed. A large part of this happens in South America, at the expense of the Amazon.
  • It is not possible- With the growing world population and the rising level of welfare we need 3 planets to be able to continue eating in the same way as we do now.
  • For your health- Not eating animal products is good for your health. It has been shown that it is good for your blood pressure and can even reverse diabetes. We feel fitter and more energetic since eating plant-based food.
  • For animal welfare- Most animals that are kept for consumption live in miserable conditions in the bio-industry. Organic animal farming is only a small percentage of the total number of animals kept for consumption.
  • If you do not eat meat for 1 day- You will save as much water as 1 month of not taking a shower and an average of 1740 grams of CO2 (comparable to about 200 km’s by car).

The vegan kitchen

Surprisingly tasty and versatile. We don’t just eat lettuce. We actually eat everything we want, but without the animal products.

Do you want to know more?
