When Nick met Julie, his future wife and business partner, in Thailand, both were working in the European Commission on Human rights and Humanitarian affairs. After a year and a half spent in Bangkok, they moved to India, a place Nick knew well as he had spent three years in Ladakh in the Himalayas getting a small fruit juice cooperative up and running.

Nick carried on working for the EC and Julie taught economics to students at the French diplomatic school and then had two lovely children and lived happily there for five amazing years.

It was while living in Delhi that they both discovered the magical soap berries, in a busy bazaar, learning that these berries had been used for centuries in the Himalayas for washing silk, hands and bodies. But little did they know that these berries were also the start of something bigger.

The birth of Greenfrog Botanic

Nick and Julie knew that there was something special about soap berries, and wanted to give everyone the chance to experience their luxurious benefits. They began work with a small Indian factory in Shimla, Andra Pradesh (India’s most environmentally conscious state) and then eventually made the first full production range in the foothills of the Himayalas.

As soon as the ranges arrived in Hove, East Sussex, UK, Greenfrog Botanic grew quickly selling the range online and via independent health stores and retailers.

What Are Soap Berries?

Soapberries, also called soapnuts, are actually a small fruit. They are the fruit of the Sapindus Mukorossi tree which is found naturally growing in the foothills of the Himalayan mountains.

The skin of this fruit contains plant saponin, a totally natural gentle soap that has been used for centuries to clean skin and clothes. Saponin works as a surfactant, breaking the surface tension of the water and create a lather that lifts dirt and grease from skin, leaving it suspended in the water that is rinsed away. For laundry, this surfactant action penetrates the fibers of your clothing too, lifting stains from the fabric and washing them away with the water.

Unlike commercial chemical and processed soaps, organic soapberry saponin is perfect for your skin. It creates a lather that is pH balanced, wonderfully moisturizing, and gently cleanses your skin and clothes. It really is the gentlest, kindest, most natural soap you can use on your skin.

There are actually a few different saponin filled soapberry trees all in the Lychee family. They are native to warm temperate and tropical regions. Mukorossi, also known as Indian Soapberry, contains the highest and most effective concentration of natural plant saponin and is the most widely grown soapberry tree. It grows naturally in the Himalaya region and is highly sustainable, requiring minimum intervention, and each tree produces 30-35kg of fruit per year.

Organic Soapberries

Our natural soap berry extract is made with organic soapberries harvested in Himachal Pradesh (Indian state in the Himalayas), certified by Indocert (the organic certification body for India) and recognised by Ecocert (The European main body for cosmetic certification).

Soapberries grow on the Sapindus Mukorrossi tree and their pulp contains up to 30% saponin. They have exceptional cleansing and foaming properties. We insist on organic Indian berries, for their high quality, the absence of chemicals and our own attachment to this part of the world!

Organic Aloe Vera

Our natural body and hand washes are infused with certified organic Aloe Vera grown in Mexico. Highly moisturising and nourishing, the Aloe Vera is known for its natural softening properties, antioxidant effects and blood circulation stimulants. Effective against burns and for healing wounds, this natural ingredient has been used for centuries all over the world.

Natural Organic Essential Oils

Geranium and Peppermint

Geranium oil is used in aromatherapy for its elevating effect on your mood. It calms the nervous system, creates a deep sense of relaxation, eliminates stress and tension and promotes clarity. Pure peppermint oil has strong cooling and refreshing properties. It reinforces the effect of Geranium as it helps to keep the mind calm and relieves stress and anxiety. Peppermint oil stimulates the tired mind, enabling it to focus and concentrate.

Neroli and Lime

Neroli is known for its delicious fragrance and mood lifting effect. Perfect for a shower it is great against fatigue and helps boost positive emotions. Lime oil is a natural antioxidant and protects the skin: it is antimicrobial, antifungal, antiallergenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic. It is used as a cleansing and tonic agent and fights fatigue.

Rose and Neroli

Joyful Rose naturally lifts our spirits with its floral delicate scent. Rose is combined with Neroli, known for its delicious fragrance and mood lifting effects. This is perfect for an indulgent luxurious soak in the bath, and it is great at the end of a long day to soothe and relax your body in natural ingredients.
