About us

Welcome to the Astonish family. From small beginnings selling our Original Oven & Cookware Cleaner door to door, today we produce a range of over 60 product from Mould Removers to Oven Cleaners to Stain Removers sold in stores nationwide. Now 2nd generation we’ve spent almost 50 years understanding the real cleaning challenges you face every day. Whatever your cleaning problem we aim to have a cleaning solution. Now we’re not saying that we can work miracles, let’s be realistic cleaning can on occasions be hard work, but we’ve taken the time to ensure we’ve developed products that get the job done right, nothing less. Simply put we’re on a mission to make real life (mould and all) shine every day.

Passionate about being Cruelty Free

When it comes to doing things right that doesn’t just include our cleaning results. We’re proud to be pioneers of animal-friendly household cleaning products. We’ve never tested our products on animals or used animal ingredients. Simple. We aim to be a shining example of how you can deliver cleaning product which get the job done without the need to test them on animals. So, given the choice why would you? Today, we are still the only UK manufactured household cleaning brand which is approved by Cruelty Free International, The Vegan and Vegetarian Society. We like to think of ourselves as squeaky clean.

We don’t just say we care about our responsibility to the environment – we show it too. All of our products are cruelty-free and suitable for vegans, in fact, we’ve never tested a single product on animals or used animal ingredients. We believe in keeping things simple.

Keeping it local

We keep things local, manufacturing everything in a state-of-the-art purpose built site near Bradford in West Yorkshire. From idea generation in our laboratory to manufacture and packing, it all happens under one roof. And, when the product is finally ready to leave the factory to head to the shelves we aim to keep our road miles to a minimum. Our distribution partner is next door and we’ve recently taken on and branded 5 Lorries to keep our road miles as efficient as possible. If we can incorporate two journeys into one, we will.  That’s cleaning up in more ways than one.

Our people

We’re a friendly bunch of around 90, led by our owner manager Howard Moss. It was Howard’s father who set the business up some 50 years ago and who can on occasions still be found popping his head around the door. From sales to lab technicians to production operatives you’ll find us all under one roof. We’re also a team with an unashamed passion for delivering Astonish cleaning results. New ideas are a plenty and as an owner led business we have the ability to bring them to life quickly.

We do not procure or use crude palm oil or palm kernel oil in any of our Astonish cleaning products and have no plans to use either of these materials in the future.

However, many soaps and active ingredients in detergents (also known as surfactants) are derived from palm oil and palm kernel oil and we do use some of these derivatives in our Astonish cleaning products. They are often used interchangeably with other plant derived materials (based on rapeseed or coconut oils) or synthetic materials (as defined above).

Crude palm oil and palm kernel oil is used in the production and supply of vegetable soap prills that we use in the manufacture of certain products. Our vegetable soap is made from blends of palm oil, palm kernel oil and coconut oil.

Products which contain vegetable soap (and therefore are palm oil based) are as follows;

  •  Astonish Premium Edition Stain Remover Bar
  • Astonish Original Oven & Cookware Cleaner
  • Astonish Specialist Oven & Grill Cleaner
  • Astonish Specialist Dish & Pan Cleaner
  • Astonish Specialist Stainless Steel Cleaner
  • Astonish Specialist Hob Cleaner

In order to reduce the impact on rainforests and land for food crops all of the soap we use is manufactured using palm oil from a RSPO certified plantation. This is from a ‘book and claim’ system as defined by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).

Palm oil can also be the source for oleic acid which widely used as the basis for soaps in a number of our cleaning products. We do not currently use oleic acid in our cleaning products.
