From start-ups to large corporations, adults today contend with many issues that make modern Adulting difficult even when one has established some level of career success. However, professional success does not automatically mean one is successful in relationships, self-care, and other life domains. I repeat, career success does not equate to life success because life is about more than doing; being also matters! Dr. Shenell provides a judgment-free zone and supportive space so that these otherwise highly successful people are free to grow in the ways desired and manifest their excellence across multiple life domains.
Regardless of where people fall on the illness—wellness continuum, chronic health conditions evoke many issues, including but not limited to: sense of grief/loss, sadness, anxiety, anger/frustration, inability to accept physical/functional limitations, strained relationships, insurance dilemmas, treatment decisions, and treatment fatigue. Folks who wish to live well will need strong support as they grieve, regroup, and recreate their lives in order to foster life satisfaction and meaning despite chronic illness.
Every facet of a Black/Brown person’s existence is impacted by skin color. While one may wish and hope for things to be different, unfortunately they are not. Rather than escape reality, Black/Brown people must be equipped with Resilience Skills to bounce back from both historical trauma and current stressors. In essence, Dr. Shenell teaches how to deal with an ever-bouncing existence and how to nurture wellness within self, family, community despite the challenges of the moment.
Dr. Shenell supports many individuals within management, human resources, education, transportation, and medical careers. These are careers whereby one’s daily work frequently requires engaging with others during emotionally-charged situations. The skills and perspectives Dr. Shenell helps to leverage their strengths and reframe the areas they’re improving. Domains of interest include: emotional awareness, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness/communication skills.
…Facilitating Posttraumatic Growth
Dr. Shenell has spent many years studying and utilizing a strengths-oriented framework in her work whether conducting psychotherapy, coaching, speaking, or teaching others. She’s just as interested in “What’s Strong?” as she is in “What’s Wrong?”
As such, many applied positive psychological constructs are vital to moving clients forward in their chosen direction. In addition to evaluating Resilience skills, Dr. Shenell also assesses her clients’ experiences of Post-Traumatic Growth (positive life changes experienced in the aftermath of trauma) and degree of Coping Self-Efficacy (belief in one’s capacity to use a variety of coping strategies when feeling unwell). Then, practical action steps are implemented to facilitate growth.
Thanks to the sharp insights and perspective taken by Dr. Shenell, individuals, families, and groups are able to do more than merely return to their baseline level of functioning, but they actually grow beyond it!
