Our Story

Clearspring is a family business and since 1993 we have been committed to pioneering authentic Japanese specialities and organic fine foods. We are proud to bring you our award-winning ranges that are enjoyed and appreciated throughout the world.

Our core belief is that everyone should have easy access to quality organic food to eat well. Our products make a valuable contribution to sustainable agriculture by supporting organic farmers, artisan food producers and a plant-based diet. Through enriching the soil and caring for the eco-system, we are protecting the world that we pass on to our children.

Our Passion

From the humble beginnings of Japanese miso soup, to over 300 organic products today, our premium quality ranges continue to grow. We are continuously inspired to bring diversity, innovation and the art of wellness through food to our offering. All our products have a distinctive flavour, made with authentic timeless recipes and by traditional methods. We never use any artificial additives or add refined sugars. Our passion is to show you just how delicious and abundant an organic and plant-based diet can be, not only how it tastes, but also how it keeps us healthy and thriving.

Our Values

We believe in the intrinsic value of our core ingredients and promise to always maintain the integrity of our mission: to provide globally sourced, high quality organic foods made to local, traditional recipes for everybody’s enjoyment and health, now and in the future.

We are committed to protecting the eco-system and the world we live in. By promoting traditional foods made with wholesome ingredients and a plant-based diet, we are supporting organic and regenerative agriculture as well as sustainable living that is in harmony with nature.

We love what we do and invite you to discover the great taste of Clearspring. Please join us on our journey and be part of paving the way to better health for people and planet.

“In 1972, as a young law student in New Zealand, I began to question the changing face of agriculture with its endless deforestation, monoculture and the mass production of cheaper quality food, presenting potential dangers for future generations.

This was the beginning of a journey that has already spanned five decades, bringing us in 1993 to the Clearspring of today, and our uniquely diverse range of organic and sustainably-produced Japanese and European fine foods that are enjoyed throughout the world. This range keeps constantly expanding with market trends. I am lucky to have my own children’s’ involvement in building the Clearspring for the future, constantly turning one more acre of land back to organic cultivation on their journeys.”

Environmental Standards

We have been pioneers of natural, animal free and organically grown foods since 1993, because right from the beginning we have known what leading experts worldwide are now saying: the way to a sustainable and healthy future is through growing and eating foods that are kind to the planet.

Our policy of providing nutritious and tasty alternatives to animal foods encourages a much better global use of land resource and trade. A primary cause of environmental degradation is from growing and shipping crops used for meat production, as well as destroying natural habitats to graze animals. By providing foods for better dietary health, we are also contributing to the significant reduction in resources needed for health care.

Certifications

We are proud to be members and licensees of the Soil Association, the UK’s leading certifier who uphold standards that are more robust than EU organic regulations.

All our products are Vegan Society approved.

Supply Chain

We work with over 40 suppliers from all over the world who have agreed to adhere to our core product criteria and values. Many are independently audited to high standards such as ISO14001 which encompass these. Moreover, by having a direct relationship with our suppliers and visiting them regularly, we know about their company ethos and operations well.

Clearspring’s Core Product Criteria include

  • 100% Vegan as defined by the UK Vegan Society – the manufacture of the product and its ingredients must not involve or have involved the use of any animal product, by-product or derivative. The potential cross-contamination with animal derived products (including meat, eggs, milk, fish, crustaceans, molluscs and their derivatives) is effectively controlled during production, storage and in the raw materials.
  • Certified organic, conforming to EU regulations and the UK Soil Association’s standards.
  • Free from ingredients or materials derived from GMOs (including processing aids and packaging)
  • Free from added sugar, honey or agave.
    • Free from refined oil. No palm oil.
    • Free from refined salt.
    • Free from chemical additives including flavour enhancers, anti-caking agents, and colourings.
    • Minimal refining of cereal grains used in the recipes.
    • Free from ingredients or materials known to be damaging to the local environment (flora and fauna), e.g. soya beans from primary rainforest areas.
    • Grown and processed with respect to local communities and in compliance with the UN Convention for Human Rights (www.un.org/rights) and the core standards of the International Labour Organisation (www.ilo.org).
    • Fair trade certified as possible.
    • Product Packaging

At Clearspring we care about good packaging. It is vital for food safety and quality preservation throughout the shelf-life of all our products, so they reach you in their best condition and do not go to waste. Its environmental impact should be as low as possible too. This is why we take the time and dedicate resources to continuously reviewing our packaging.

The good news is that the primary packaging material of over 70% of our products is already recyclable and quite a few of our ranges are zero waste. This means that none of it has to go to landfill (subject to the availability of recycling facilities which varies in every local authority and country).
