They say that successful businesses are borne from the desire to solve a problem which transcends convenience, or greed – something which means more to the world than just making life easier or gathering wealth.
Let me tell you: to look at your child and see them suffering is one big motivator.
At just a year old, our beautiful son began developing a tight, painful rash which covered him from head to toe – hands, shoulders, both arms and legs. No part of him was left untouched; out of nowhere came this unforgiving red outbreak, with seemingly little relief, and certainly no cure.
We tried absolutely everything. The doctors prescribed steroid creams; he underwent allergy tests. We spent days on end in and out of hospital consulting with all manner of specialists. When it got to the point that he couldn’t sleep for itching and scratching, often in a rage of agony, we tried special suits designed to relieve the pain – all to no avail. We’d find something which would work for a week or two, before the eczema returned with a vengeance, often to different parts of the body and always more aggressive than before. Nothing was working – and so, the conversations about more serious courses of action began.
It felt so final – steroids are not something to be scoffed at or taken lightly. We were talking about our son, at just a year old, beginning a course of medicine which he may have to continue with for the next three, five, ten years… And what then? What comes after that? What happens when the body is so out of balance that he can’t cope without them?
What if it doesn’t even work?
We were determined
Armed with a background in science, a few years’ experience working in a laboratory and the determination to help our child, we decided it was time to take matters into our own hands. The goal was to find and create an alternative to steroid-based products which would soothe, heal and bring relief to our baby’s pain; we wanted to try things the ‘old fashioned’ way: healing the way nature intended, encompassing our deep beliefs in the wholeness of the mind-body-spirit complex.
Soon thereafter, we discovered the Neem plant.
During our vast journey of researching all-natural ingredients and holistic remedies to our son’s symptoms,we encountered the Neem plant time and time again. Immediately excited by its antiseptic, antifungal and antibacterial tendencies, we delved deeper into the livelihood of this amazing tree – we soon discovered that scientific research has proven its effective use as an antiviral and dermatological agent, not to mention its long and documented history of use in traditional Indian medicine.
For centuries, people have been using Neem seed oil to aid in the healing of topical skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, burns and acne. It proved to be rich in fatty acids and glycerides which, together with its healing properties, made it an outstanding base for skin care products and remedies; Neem could be the answer to all of our, and our son’s, problems.
“Every problem is a gift. Without them, we wouldn’t grow.”
We began experimenting at home, mixing the Neem plant and its derivatives with other, more well-known skin-healing ingredients. Despite our kitchen resembling the laboratory of some kind of eccentric scientist, we had finally produced something resembling our now-famous Neem cream – and, better yet, we were seeing results. Within three months we could see a significant improvement in our son’s skin and by month six the eczema had disappeared completely.
From there, things snowballed.
A neighbour of ours noticed and commented on how much his skin had improved; we gave them a little to try and, amazingly, they too saw incredible results. Word was quick to spread about our ‘miracle formulation’ – the phone went into overdrive with people trying to get hold of our product. It was here when we realized how many people out there we could help – and itreatskin as you know it today began to form.
Our journey has been a whirlwind.
