Vegan Retreat in Romagne

On the banks of the River Clain in rural France

Come and join us at our 18th Century renovated watermill which sits alongside the River Clain. We are in the heart of the Vienne region of France, 5km from the Vallée des Singes.

Nature at its best …

Nestled between woodland and it’s own wild island, come and breathe fresh air, enjoy home cooked vegan meals, star gaze on a clear night. Sit back and relax in one of the riverside clearings with a deckchair, and listen to the rippling water and bird song.

Lots to see and do …

In addition to the places to visit shown below, why not explore one of the many local pathways on foot or mountain bike. Take out the boat and row gently down the river. For the more courageous, take a refreshing dip in the most natural of pools, the Clain.

Environmentally friendly …

We aim to provide an environmentally friendly stay, with natural and upcycled decoration, organic bed linen and towels and healthy plant-based wholefood made from locally sourced organic produce.

Welcome …

We welcome guests who care about well-being for all, people and animals, wildlife and the environment. Those who want to experience nature at its finest and enjoy the various activities offered in the Vienne.

Our Food

Our food philosophy is ‘health’. That’s healthy for you, healthy for the animals and for the environment.

We believe in locally sourced and seasonal natural foods with no chemical additives and no plastic packaging. All our meals are made on the premises. They are plant based whole food.

Would you like to try raw, wild foods or algue based meals? Let us know, and we’ll try to incorporate these into your meal.

It would be a great pleasure to cook for other vegans. Equally, it would be wonderful to share delicious and varied vegan cuisine with non-vegans who might like a break from meat. Or they may simply want to learn more about meat-alternative options.

  • Breakfast at Moulin de la Cueille
  • For breakfast, our favourites are:
  • Porridge or pancakes served with fresh seasonal fruit.
  • Home made chocolate or fruit granola or muesli.
  • Home baked sourdough bread or toast with local jams, or locally made croissants, chocolatines or pain au raisins.
  • A selection of cakes and vegan yoghurt.
  • A glass of seasonal fruit juice or perhaps a tasty smoothie.
  • There is a vast choice of infusions and teas to chose from.
  • Of course, there is always a jug of freshly ground coffee on the go at breakfast time.

Rooms

Minoterie

43.400

The Minoterie is the french granary where flour was made and stored. Full of lovely old oak beams, this room retains some of the old pulleys and winches that used to haul the sacks of flour in the mill. If you’re looking for loads of natural light, then this is the room for you, with a window on three of the four walls … the view of the river and woodland make sitting by the window a definite pleasure. The kingsize bed has an original granary door as its headboard – and to create a home from home, there’s a recycled table/desk, two comfortable Papasan loungers and a full bookshelf.

Next to the bedroom, accessed by the bedroom’s private lobby is the shower room with single sink, shower and WC.

It is possible to link the Minoterie with the Ecluse bedroom to create an appartment for 4 guests, sharing the private shower room. The price for the appartment would be between €150-€160 depending on the season, including an organic breakfast for all.

The Klimt

The Klimt is a spacious suite, but definitely has a cosy feel to it. Based on the second floor with amazing views, it’s dedicated to one of our favourite artists. If you’re inspired to sketch, why not set yourself up next to one of the three windows, each overlooking a different aspect of the garden … the river, the woods, the bridge to the island, or even the rockface next to the lane. Table and chairs are provided so that guests can draw, paint, read, take tea, write a postcard, catch up on work or simply enjoy the scenery. The suite includes a walk-in dressing room, a separated bedroom area with queensize bed, and a modern bathroom with WC, sink and walk in shower.

Bief

57.400

The Bief suite is conveniently situated on the first floor, next to the lounge, and has some stunning views over the river and woodland. It also overlooks the watermill’s ‘bief’, which is the channel of water which runs from the wheel area to rejoin the river.

This is the largest bedroom in the Mill, and the suite includes an entrance hall with space for coats and cases, a separate WC and bathroom with double sink unit. The bedroom itself is furnished with a comfortable kingsize bed, a table and chairs on which to take breakfast or catch up on paperwork, as well as a small Chesterfield and coffee table. There is also a small bookcase which its own stock of English and French novels. .

The Clain

The Clain is a good sized bedroom on the ground floor which benefits from having two exterior doors, one to the front which gives direct access to the parking, and the back door, which leads you into its own private courtyard garden, which is fully fenced and has a beautiful outlook over the river. For this reason, this room is ideal for guests arriving with their canine companions.

The Clain bedroom has been named after the river, and so the room reflects the colours of the water with relaxing greys, blues and greens. Equipped with a comfortable queensize bed and hanging space for clothes, a small sofa, was well as interior and exterior table and chairs.

The en-suite shower room has recently been refurbished and has a spacious shower, twin sinks which have been fitted to a reclaimed workshop bench, and WC. The light fittings in this room were created using old ‘Le Parfait’ jars found in the local bric-a-brac.

Ecluse

01.400

On the second floor this twin room can be rented individually, or linked to the Minoterie bedroom to make an appartment for 4.

The room is a relaxing shade of mint green, with a view over the courtyard to the front, the cliff face opposite and the surrounding woodland. As well as the two single beds, there is hanging space, shelves and a small desk.

The bathroom is shared with one other room, just along the corridor, and has a bath with shower, sink and WC.
