Reiki Healing Energies

“Reiki is a method of working with universal energy that you can use for your own benefit and for the benefit of other people. In its original Japanese form in the 1900s Reiki was very much about working on yourself: it was a system that you could use for self-healing, self-development and spiritual development. But when Reiki was first taught in the West in the 1970s, and since that time, Reiki teaching has focused much more on Reiki as a treatment technique and the system appears to many people to be a sort of or spiritual healing, a hands-on treatment method that involves channelling energy.

“To understand Reiki, you need to get your head around the idea that there is a subtle energy that permeates us and surrounds us, an energy which we can learn to experience and direct, an energy which we can move through our bodies and channel through us into other people. While this may seem to be a strange thing to believe from a Western perspective, it is a central belief in many Asian cultures and underlies many exercise systems, meditation practices and healing or treatment methods.

“When you practise Reiki as a treatment method you are not detecting and diagnosing and intervening. When you treat someone with Reiki you are allowing an unlimited external source of ‘energy’ to flow through you into the client. The energy is drawn through you according to the client’s need on that occasion: you are not directing the energy, you are a conduit through which the energy flows, you are creating a ‘healing space’ that the client can use to bring their own energy system into balance, without conscious and deliberate intervention on your part.”

“Crystals, though mined from the depths of the earth, are things of light and beauty. Since ancient times crystals have offered us a wealth of ways to heal our spirit and enhance our lives. They are incredibly versatile. They can be used in a wide range of ways to improve your life physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

“Ancient peoples believed that crystals had fallen from the heavens as gifts from their ancestors. This notion is not so far from the truth. All the particles that make up matter once originated within the hearts of old stars. When these stars exploded, their particles were scattered throughout the universe and reformed as new stars and planets.

“The forms of crystal healing that are in use today arose in the alternative cultures of the 1970s and 1980s, but like many complementary systems, they have developed out of old cultural traditions. The idea that every stone has special magical properties can be traced back through European literature of the early Middle Ages to their sources in Greek, Roman and Arabic philosophy, which in turn owe much to the Ayurvedic traditions of India.

“Modern crystal healers initially focused very much on the properties of rock crystal (clear quartz). Traditionally crystals of quartz have been highly valued by healers around the world for their ability to connect with spirit worlds, to reveal and diagnose illness and to allow a shaman or healer to remove the cause of disease. The use of crystals, crystal mirrors and crystal balls for divination is simply a continuation of this long tradition.

“These mystical ways of using crystals are usually dismissed by modern science as mere superstition, and yet science recognizes the unique – and often very strange – properties of minerals and crystals, making use of their characteristics in everything from wristwatches (quartz), automobile sparkplugs (kyanite), medical lasers (ruby) and space shuttle windows (sapphire).

The pragmatic and metaphysical views of the crystal world may seem to be mutually exclusive. However, both approaches are valuable. One provides useful tools and technologies, while the other enables us to see beyond the here and now into the realm of imagination and potential. If we only pay attention to one of these sides of our natures, we miss out on a wealth of experience – both are necessary to keep us whole and healthy. Crystal healing can restore fundamental balance to our existence.”
