Farm Animal Sanctuary in Pennsylvania

About Us-

We have been providing animals a permanent home on our 13.7 acre property since relocating to the Susquehanna Valley in 2007 and adopting our first dog, Maya from the Lycoming County SPCA. The 2015 founding of the Farm Animal Rescue of Mifflinburg (FARM) fulfills our longstanding desire to help even more needy animals find a permanent home. It has taken a long time and a lot of work and investment to transform our property from a collection of fallow farm fields overrun with barnyard grass, wild carrot and ragweed into an organized group of fenced pastures, animal shelters and storage sheds.

Due to the limitations of our land resources, we are forced to limit the size and number of animals we take in. For example, we could pasture a single 1,000 lb. horse on an acre or 4 miniature horses in the same area. As much as we would love to never have to say, “no” we only take in equines under 38″ at the base of the mane – our Thoroughbred, King is an exception to this rule, as he was brought to the FARM prior to incorporating.

We will also accept llamas, alpacas and goats, provided that they are healthy or any known medical issues are disclosed (a medical issue is not automatic grounds for refusing an animal, but we need to be sure we have special housing or other resources available related to the animal’s condition at the time the animal would be re-homed with us). If you have an animal you are trying to re-home and you aren’t sure if it will fit in at the FARM, please give us a call; if we cannot take it we may be able to refer you to another sanctuary that can!

OUR MISSION

Providing a permanent home, quality feed, veterinary and preventive care and shelter to unwanted, abandoned, neglected or abused farm animals while reaching out to the public to encourage humane treatment of animals. Donations from the public and the founders fund these efforts.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

– All living things deserve our respect and the opportunity to live with dignity

– We are not opposed to eating meat or otherwise utilizing animals as a resource – but we do oppose factory farms, puppy mills or any other facilities that treat animals inhumanely

– We encourage people to explore a vegetarian or partial vegetarian lifestyle (try meatless Mondays!) as an alternative to eating animals

– Animals of different species have different group dynamics and require training and communication tailored to fit their expectations of leadership

– Animals deserve the security and stability of a permanent home- accepting an animal into your herd, pride, pack, troupe, clutch, flock, etc. should be a permanent thing unless unforeseen circumstances requiring a re-homing should arise

– We are not fans of livestock auctions or other animal sales in which buyers are not thoroughly screened – many auctioned animals are sent to slaughter or bounce from home to home

How is the Farm Animal Rescue of Mifflinburg different?

Most animal rescues take in unwanted, abused and/or neglected animals, rehabilitate them and re-home them, charging adoptive families re-homing fees. This is important work that helps many animals find quality, permanent homes; however, some of these re-homed animals later find themselves back at the rescue or on the auction block, perpetuating the cycle of instability that we believe contributes to animal anxiety, decreased quality of life and, sometimes, potentially dangerous unpredictability.

The Farm Animal Rescue of Mifflinburg provides PERMANENT SANCTUARY to these same animals, providing the same rehabilitative services as other rescues but also addressing the seemingly never-ending cycle of settling in – upheaval – settling in – upheaval. It is our belief that herd animals are especially vulnerable to severe anxiety as a result of frequent changes to their range and the loss of herd members to whom they may have grown attached. Providing them permanent sanctuary offers animals the opportunity to live in a more stable environment with herdmates they can bond to without the stress of separation, relocation and fighting for position in a new herd.

Providing permanency comes at a cost, as we do not receive re-homing fees and we have an ever-growing roster of animals consuming resources. PUBLIC SUPPORT AND DONATIONS ARE VITAL TO OUR CONTINUING OPERATIONS! Thank you to our sponsor: Refrigerant Charging Machine

FARM Visits

Visits are arranged by appointment only and are dependent upon the weather and other conditions. Please contact us with your interest, and thank you!

DONORS NEEDED! The Farm Animal Rescue of Mifflinburg provides a permanent home, quality feed and veterinary care to as many animals as our resources will allow.  No person affiliated with the FARM receives financial compensation or pecuniary benefit of any kind – 100% of funds donated are applied to costs of running the sanctuary, primarily feed.

Volunteer

The Farm Animal Rescue of Mifflinburg offers animal lovers who support our mission the opportunity to help us help the animals that call the FARM home.

RESTRICTIONS: Volunteers must be 18 or older and have medical/health insurance coverage.  THERE IS NO SMOKING PERMITTED ON THE PROPERTY.  Experience working with animals is helpful, but not required.

WHAT TO EXPECT: If you become a volunteer at the FARM, you should expect to work in all types of weather.  The work is often dirty and sometimes quite strenuous.  You should expect to work inside of animal enclosures, sometimes very close to the animals (they like to supervise!).  Wearing clothing appropriate to this type of work and the weather conditions is required, including closed-toe shoes (boots are recommended).

WHAT IT IS NOT: Volunteering should not be seen as just an opportunity to come out and pet farm animals, offer them treats and/or give them hugs.  When our work is over, there may be time for these things, but the work that volunteers do is important for helping us keep the animals healthy and safe.

WHAT IT IS: Working with these animals is fun and rewarding, and a great way to spend time outdoors in a country setting!

Everything that we do at the Farm Animal Rescue of Mifflinburg we do for the benefit of the animals – we’re volunteers, too! No person affiliated with the FARM receives any financial benefit of any kind!

If you would like to apply and can commit to working a few hours a week or more, please download an application packet, sign and mail to the address located at the top of this web page or scan it and email to info@farmanimalrescueofmifflinburg.org …thank you for your interest!
