Farm Animal Sanctuary in North Carolina

About Us

Established in 2015, Flip Side Sanctuary strives to provide a safe haven for abused, abandoned, orphaned and neglected farmed and companion animals that have no place to go. Our goal is to rehabilitate and nurture these animals in an environment where they can thrive.

Flip Side Sanctuary is dedicated to developing programs to inspire the public to have more compassion for all living beings. We champion our rescues by creating opportunities to share their stories of survival and resilience to educate the community at large. We advocate for animal kindness and speak out against animal cruelty.

As of 2021, Flip Side Sanctuary has rescued over 350 animals to date. Our dog/cat program has successfully rehabbed and placed 20 animal survivors into loving forever homes. We continue to expand our foster program to engage more volunteers and increase our ability to save more animals.

Flip Side Sanctuary was started by founders Gregg and myself, Cindy Holm. We have been married for 25 years and rescued animals have always been a part of their lives. I have been a licensed Vet Tech for over 20 years, volunteered for many organizations and fostered numerous special needs animals. Gregg has been a carpenter for over 20 years. He always helped with the animals and had a major part in caring for them all.

We have always loved animals, but it wasn’t until Milton came along and started to change my perspective on how I looked at animals raised for food. Milton was thrown over a fence at a dairy along with his sister who was found dead. Milton was so sick and covered in parasites. He was just tossed out like trash. He was so full of personality and craved love and attention just like the dogs and cats we rescued.

We then rescued three chickens from Animal Place that were from a factory farm. There was one girl in particular, Peggy, who would sit on my lap while I read in the yard. One day I was sitting outside with Peggy on my lap and Milty by my side and it was then that I realized that all animals are feeling individuals with unique personalities, even the ones we ate. I read Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer and immediately became a vegetarian, but something still did not seem right.

These poor animals that I loved and lived with were just discarded and slaughtered from the dairy and egg industry. They were being used and abused for what they could produce. It was like a light switch had flipped. I then realized that going vegan was the right thing to do. Now Gregg, who loved his meat and especially his milk, was going to be a challenge or so I thought.

It only took one short video, Farm to Fridge- The Truth about Meat Production by Mercy for Animals, to change his mind and go completely vegan. We started coming across more animals in desperate need for help and soon realized that we wanted to devote the rest of their lives to rescuing farmed animals and showing people that they are truly individuals who all think, feel and want to live. We ate meat, eggs, and dairy for 40+ years and now know it is never too late to change. We realize that

people are not always open to change and pushing views will make some defensive as it would have us in the past. We choose to educate, raise awareness, and live by example. We want to help the animals have a voice to show that they have just as much as a right to live as anyone.
