Vegan Animal Sanctuary in California

About Us

Our mission is to provide life-long care for our rescued animals, and to educate the public about humane animal care and practices. We rehabilitate, both physically and psychologically, mistreated animals and, if possible, we will find appropriate homes for them. In an effort to prevent further cruelty to these animals, we educate the public on caring for companion animals as well as on issues concerning farmed animals.

Harvest Home is an official sanctuary for House Rabbit Society, based in Richmond, CA.

Nestled in fertile farmland in California’s San Joaquin Valley, our two-acre rescue and rehabilitation sanctuary is home to 12 unique animal species. Our life-saving animal protection efforts are focused primarily on rabbits and birds.

In 2004, Stockton’s Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary was established by longtime animal protection advocates, Karen Courtemanche and Annemarie Engelhardt. Our sanctuary incorporated as a nonprofit in May 2005, and our 501(c)3 tax-exempt status was confirmed by the IRS in August 2006. Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary is a 501(c)3 non-profit and donations are tax-deductible. Our Federal Tax ID No. is 56-2515797.

volunteer selfieNestled in vineyards in California’s San Joaquin Valley, our two-acre sanctuary is home to 11 unique animal species. Visiting our sanctuary is a relaxing, personal way to learn more about our amazing stories of animal rescue and rehabilitation. We are only an hour and 30 minutes’ drive from the San Francisco Bay Area, or an hour and 15 minutes from Sacramento.

Visit the sanctuary’s events calendar for upcoming tour dates.

For our animals’ safety, please leave companion animals at home when you come to visit.

You can also visit us at one of our many fun, inspiring, and educational events at the sanctuary and beyond. Visit our Facebook events page or our upcoming events page to find out what we have planned.

Out of respect for the non-human residents of Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary, all of our events both on- and off- site are completely plant based. When we have visitors at the Sanctuary who may bring their own food, we ask that their meals and snacks are also vegan.

Our special members sustain us in a way that pays our animal care expenses every month. Without this special club, we could not survive. Did you know that it costs:

  • $25 to pay the feed costs of one goat per month?
  • $30 to pay the feed costs of one pig per month?
  • $40 to pay the feed costs for the flock of chickens for one month?
  • $50 to cover the care for one special needs rabbit per month?
  • $200 to feed the entire rabbit room for one month?

That’s a lot of food costs!

Planned Giving – Be a Harvest Home Angel!

The Harvest Home Angels is a special group of Harvest Home friends who have remembered Harvest Home in their estate plans. These generous friends have made their gifts through bequests, retirement plans, or life insurance policies. Your estate plan gift will help build a strong heritage for Harvest Home and ensure that we can continue our important rescue work for generations to come.

Planned gifts to Harvest Home can be made in two ways: bequests through wills and trusts, and through retirement plans and life insurance policies.

Wills and Trusts. Bequests of all sizes are welcome. You may make a bequest of cash, securities, or real estate by designating a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or a particular asset. A bequest is simple to arrange in consultation with your legal adviser. It is a revocable arrangement, enabling you to make alterations as your circumstances change. Moreover, a bequest to Harvest Home will qualify your estate for an estate tax deduction as allowable by law.

Sample Will Provision: “I give (____ dollars), (_____ percent of the residue of my estate) or (a specific asset) to Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary.” Please be sure to speak with your estate planner or legal adviser to answer any questions you may have.

Life Insurance Policies. You may name Harvest Home as the beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k), or other retirement plan or your life insurance policy. Such a gift is easy to arrange with help from your tax advisers.

If you would like to join the Harvest Home Angels, please email us at margo@harvesthomesanctuary.org. We would be delighted to work with you and your advisers to plan a gift that would be most advantageous to you.
