Vegan Farm Animal Sanctuary in North Carolina
Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge (the Refuge) is a non-profit organization that works to rescue farm animals in need, educate people about the cruelties of factory farms, and promote veganism by offering knowledge, support, and community to people interested in living cruelty-free lifestyles. Founded in 2012, the Refuge is located in North Carolina just 15 minutes away from the downtowns of Carrboro, Saxapahaw, and Pittsboro and 20 minutes away from downtown Chapel Hill.
Our vision is to live in a world where the need for farmed animal rescue, education about the factory farm industry, and promotion of a vegan lifestyle are no longer necessary because the world is vegan and the exploitation of animals for consumption has ended.
Rescue
The Refuge is a sanctuary for rescued chickens, turkeys, ducks, sheep, and goats who come from lives of abuse, neglect and abandonment. These animals find peace and protection on 20 acres of pasture and woods where they are provided with top notch, life-long care. As the Refuge grows we will expand to provide homes for rescued pigs and cattle.
Factory Farming Education
Farm animals living in factory farms suffer from intense confinement, physical mutilations and denial of their most basic natural desires. Routine practices in these facilities equate to animal cruelty that would be illegal if done to dogs or cats. The Refuge is working to educate the general public about these cruel practices through providing innovative literature, guided sanctuary tours, and other creative educational experiences.
Veganism
The Refuge strives to inspire and encourage cruelty-free living by offering a non-judgmental, supportive community of compassionate advocates who work to answer questions and offer solutions for people interested in moving towards a vegan lifestyle. Through cooking classes, bake sales, food samplings, and other food-based events, we work to provide the tools people need to make compassionate choices.
Welcome and thank you for your interest in taking a tour with us! Tours take place every Monday at 11AM, Wednesday at 11AM and Saturday at 4PM. Please see our tour calendar for available dates. All tours are prescheduled through our website. Tours last about an hour and a half and take place outside at a leisurely pace. As a guest, you will be given an opportunity to feed, interact with, and learn about our rescued residents, including chickens, turkeys, ducks, sheep, and goats.
Getting to the Refuge
We are very close to the intersection of NC-87N and Chicken Bridge Road in Pittsboro, NC. GPS can mislead visitors so please follow our directions here.
Parking
Please park at our office located at 7236 NC-87N, Pittsboro, NC 27312. There is a black mailbox with this address. The office looks like a residential house with green and white striped awnings.

OFFICE VOLUNTEERING
DESCRIPTION:
Come hang with awesome staff member Phillip at the office of Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge! You will assist in data entry, organization, cleaning, and other much needed tasks.
VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS:

SANCTUARY PROJECTS
DESCRIPTION:
Lend a hand at the sanctuary and get to know our animal residents. Activities include laundry, treat feeding, socialization, cleaning, and organizing.
VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS:
-you must commit to a minimum of 1 year volunteering
-you must commit to a minimum of 1 volunteer shift per month
-you must be 18 years or older, or between 14 and 18 years old and be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian

ANIMAL CARE
DESCRIPTION:
Assist in the daily care of our 75+ residents including feeding, watering, cleaning projects, enrichment and socialization.
VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS:
- you must submit an application and attend an orientation before starting
- you must commit to a minimum of 1 year volunteering
- you must commit to a minimum of 3 volunteer shifts per month
- you must be able to lift and carry 5 gallon water buckets, hay bales and other such heavy items
- you must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- you must be 18 years or older

Tour & Explore at Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge!
Experience a magical animal haven during a self-guided tour of Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge! Upon arriving each group will receive a colorful detailed map of the Refuge grounds. Wander at your own pace through woods and fields meeting rescued goats, sheep, ducks, geese, chickens and turkeys!
Guides will be stationed throughout the Refuge to tell you enchanting stories of animal rescue, introducing you to each animal by name. While visiting don’t miss our serene animal memorial, our unique architectural designs, and our quaint gift shop.
