ABOUT US

Asha was my canine companion. I named her that because it means life, and that is exactly what she gave me. My baby, Asha, died of cancer at only 11 years old. The hardest part for me was seeing her leave this world when I desperately wanted her to stay. Shortly after her death, I searched for more meaning in my life. That’s when I was pressed to investigate auction houses. There I witnessed the heartless and abusive treatment of newborn baby calves, young goats, chickens and pigs.

They were scared and frightened, and at the time I could not help. I thought about Asha and how she showed me that life is so short. Without any further thought, I sold my comfortable home in the suburbs, quit my job and founded Asha’s Farm Sanctuary. In losing Asha, I realized that our time on earth is but a glimpse. I wanted to make a difference for animals being farmed by exposing the cruelty and giving people a chance to see they are no different than a dog and cat.

I honored my canine companion by naming the sanctuary after her. Later I learned that Asha means “hope” too. I miss her deeply to this day, but I know that her spirit lives on at the sanctuary and in each and every animal we give life to and hope for a compassionate world.

Onsite Internships

College Learning Facility

Asha’s Farm Sanctuary provides a hands-on learning experience for students enrolled in colleges, universities and trade schools. During the semester, students typically spend one day a week at our sanctuary and become proficient in various aspects of shelter management as well as the care of the animals.

Administrative Internship

The Administrative Intern is vital to keeping Asha’s Farm Sanctuary running smoothly and is responsible for nearly all of our administrative functioning and clerical projects. This is a great opportunity to acquire professional office experience and gain insight into nonprofit administrative work and operations.

Development Internship

The Development Intern works closely with the president in assisting with the management of nearly all fundraising needed to operate our shelter, education, and advocacy efforts. Development interns help with database and member relations projects and perform some of the administrative work necessary to ensure that Asha’s Farm Sanctuary is able to continue our lifesaving work. As an Asha’s Farm Sanctuary intern, you will learn skills applicable across the nonprofit world.

Education and Visitor Program Internship

The Education and Visitor Intern at Asha’s Farm Sanctuary assists in organizing events like Kiss a Cow Day! and Fall Festival for Farmed Animals. The Education and Visitor Intern is responsible for the experience of guests visiting the sanctuary, tours of the sanctuary, and open house events. Through all these programs and events, hundreds of guests come to meet our farmed animal residents and learn more about Asha’s Farm Sanctuary’s work and mission. As an intern, you will gain experience by providing event support, speaking to guests and visitors about veganism and farm animal issues, and contributing to our many educational and advocacy campaigns and programs.

Human Resources Internship

In addition to traditional human resources functions, our Human Resources Intern assists in the management of Asha’s Farm Sanctuary’s volunteer programs. The department team focuses on matching compassionate individuals with opportunities in which their talents and experience can support our mission. The Human Resources Intern provides administrative support in a wide range of program areas, including but not limited to volunteer inquiries, applicant tracking, safety programs, and online research projects. Intern will work with the department director as well as volunteer program coordinators and have the opportunity to build HR and volunteer management skills.

Shelter Projects Internship

The Shelter Intern is responsible for assisting with animal rescue and care. Shelter Interns are crucial to the daily functioning of the sanctuary. Whether they are cleaning barns, doing laundry, or closing in the animals at night, every day interns work with caregivers to provide lifesaving care for the hundreds of animals we shelter. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain experience with farm animals and learn the basics of what it takes to run a shelter.

Be ready to make personal and intimate relationships with our very friendly rescued, farmed animals who absolutely love visitors. The rescued, farmed animals that live here had all suffered severely in the food industry due to standard practices in animal agriculture, and you will hear all about their individual stories of triumph and hope at Asha’s Farm Sanctuary where they can finally heal and learn to trust again. As we are an educational organization, our tour guides do discuss in graphic detail about common practices in animal agriculture. Tourists may may find this information disturbing.
