Vegan Sanctuary in Sweden

The animal shelter Tigerharen is an ideal organization that has been around since January 2004 and has since helped hundreds of animals to a better life. We assume a legal basis for animal welfare in our work and our activities have looked a little different over the years. At the end of 2017, we finally bought our own farm, and we are now working primarily on building a permanent livestock farm. We create a space for the animals to exist solely for their own sake, having a contentious life and having the opportunity to make different choices in their everyday lives.

Our focus is on animals that are all too often forgotten, those who are exploited and killed in the animal industry. Therefore, we have chosen to receive exempted animals, which we are open to when we find it important that someone tells their story.

Among other things, we have received animals as the action group Tomma Burar has exempted from industry and helped the Animal Alliance to relocate many of the chinchillas released from Sweden’s last chinchilla sheep farm. The fact that we receive animals that are in such a vulnerable situation mean that we can not have an open visitor activity when the well-being and safety of animals comes first.

Starting from a petition for animal rights means for us to create space in this society where the positions of non-human beings move forward. Rooms where they are seen as individuals with their own feelings, experiences and wills, spaces where there is the opportunity to create a life based on what one thinks feels reasonable. We do this in concrete terms at the end of the animal life, and we do it partly by openly questioning the prevailing standards of how people use other animals, both in industry and as companies and entertainment.

Often we receive requests from private individuals if we can receive or help relocate family animals that someone has tired of, become allergic to, unable to take part in the move, can not survive because of new human beings, etc. We do not. It is the responsible person who will take responsibility, not us as an animal shelter.

If you read this is in a position where you do not want to live with an animal for which you are responsible for longer, consider the following: Perhaps your animal may remain alive, but it’s great to realize that your interests are not in primarily. Perhaps you can begin to eat allergy medicine or stand out with some clums sometimes, it’s not the whole world compared to tearing up someone’s existence. Perhaps you should not move to a place where your entire family can not live.

Perhaps you should have thought about how the rest of your family would react before you got a person and maybe you can find solutions to how one who feels forgotten or jealous can feel included again. What we want to say about it is that you have a responsibility over someone’s life. If, however, you come to the conclusion that you have to relocate an animal, be sure to make sure that the new home meets all the needs of the animal and is lifelong.

Our ultimate aim is that the animal shelter should not exist. This means that we want to see a more equal society where non-human animals are not seen as products or producers, nor as goods or identity markers.

Nobody is free until everyone is free!

Djurhemmet Tigerharen är en ideell organisation som har funnits sedan januari 2004 och har sedan dess hjälpt många hundratals djur till ett bättre liv. Vi utgår från en djurrättslig grund i vårt arbete och vår verksamhet har sett lite olika ut genom åren. I slutet av 2017 köpte vi äntligen en egen gård och vi jobbar nu främst med att bygga upp en permanent djurfristad. Vi skapar ett utrymme för djuren att finnas till enbart för sin egen skull, ha ett innehållsrikt liv och ha möjlighet att göra olika val i sin vardag.

Vårt fokus är djuren som allt för ofta glöms bort, de som utnyttjas och dödas i djurindustrin. Därför har vi bland annat valt att ta emot djur som fritagits, vilket vi är öppna med då vi tycker det är viktigt att någon berättar deras historia.

Bland annat har vi tagit emot djur som aktionsgruppen Tomma Burar har fritagit från industrin samt hjälpt Djurrättsalliansen att omplacera många av de chinchillor som befriades från Sveriges sista chinchillapälsfarm. Att vi tar emot djur som är i en så utsatt situation gör att vi inte kan ha en öppen besöksverksamhet då djurens välmående och säkerhet kommer först.

Att utgå från en djurrättslig grund innebär för oss att skapa rum i det här samhället där de icke-mänskliga djurens maktpositioner flyttas fram. Rum där de blir sedda som individer med egna känslor, upplevelser och viljor, rum där det finns möjlighet att skapa sig ett liv utifrån vad en själv tycker känns rimligt. Vi gör det dels konkret på djurfristaden och vi gör det dels genom att öppet ifrågasätta rådande normer kring hur människor utnyttjar andra djur, både inom industrin och som sällskap och underhållning.

Ofta får vi förfrågningar från privatpersoner om vi kan ta emot eller hjälpa till att omplacera familjedjur som någon tröttnat på, blivit allergisk mot, inte kan ta med i flytten, inte kan ha kvar pga ny människobebis etc.

Det gör vi inte. Det är den ansvariga människan som ska ta det ansvaret, inte vi som djurhem. Om du som läser det här står i en position där du inte vill leva ihop med ett djur som du har ansvar för längre, fundera på följande: Kanske kan djuret bo kvar fastän du tröttnat, det går utmärkt att inse att dina intressen inte går i första hand. Kanske kan du börja äta allergimedicin eller stå ut med lite kli ibland, det är inte hela världen i jämförelse med att slita upp någons tillvaro. Kanske borde du inte flytta till ett ställe där hela din familj inte kan bo.

Kanske borde du ha tänkt på hur resten av din familj skulle reagera innan du skaffade en människa och kanske kan du hitta lösningar på hur den som känner sig bortglömd eller avundsjuk kan känna sig inkluderad igen. Vad vi vill säga med det är att du har ett ansvar över någons liv. Om du trots allt kommer till slutsatsen att du måste omplacera ett djur så var noga med att se till att det nya hemmet uppfyller djurets alla behov och är livslångt.

Vår yttersta målsättning är att djurhemmet inte ska behöva finnas. Det innebär att vi vill se ett mer jämlikt samhälle där icke-mänskliga djur inte ses som produkter eller producenter, inte heller som varor eller identitetsmarkörer.
